House renovation is a real monster. Every time you think you are on schedule and moving forward, a new challenge pops up and you have to reassess. Renovating a whole house at once also means you are “ping pong-ing” around between different jobs as they all depend on other parts being completed first. Because of this it is easy to feel like you are completing nothing but when you do take a moment to step back you suddenly realise what you are achieving.
Last couple of months we’ve been tackling the big messy jobs so that we are ready before winter hits. Winter in the highlands is no joke. Regular high winds, plenty of rain and big dumps of snow can slow you down, and anything not fixed down to the ground well enough soon becomes at risk of damage. Jobs like replacing joists and woodworm ridden flooring, insulation, weatherproofing, and plumbing have been at the forefront of our list along with fixing and replacing exterior doors. We even had to completely rebuild the utility room at the back of the house before it becomes to wet on the ground to sort it out.
Making this video was quite therapeutic though, as I soon realised just how much work we had achieved. We don’t have a big budget, and we wouldn’t have been able to achieve anything unless we did the work ourselves so it has been undeniably stressful at times but the rewards have been massive. Every single job has been undertaken by ourselves with exception of some vital work from an electrician. All I can say is thank god for our own past experience, good books and instructional YouTube videos created by professionals! There certainly is a wealth of knowledge to tap into.
In any case, it’s all starting to come together now and there will be more updates very soon!
