Behind The Scenes: Episode 9 - Looking For The Lek

Behind The Scenes: Episode 9 - Looking For The Lek

Black grouse are easily one of Scotland's most iconic species, but to see them you need to head to the right habitat. We are very lucky to be living very near to one of the largest lekking sites in this part of Scotland and it took a bit of planning to arrive in the dark (about 3am!) to film and witness this specticle for myself without spooking them.

While the footage is perhaps not the most detailed I was not in a position, nor did I want to get to close and upset them. I climbed a hill facing the site, and nestled down in the heather so that I blended seamlessly into the landscape. The lek last about two hours from first light until the dawn breaks. So by 6am it is all said and done!

I know we are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such wildlife here and that is why I enjoy taking the time to film it and try to share some of my encounters with you all. I hope my videos continue to offer a pool of calm in life's stormy sea, and perhaps it will spark some inspiration for you to have your own adventures outdoors too.
